Alberta’s Special Needs Assistance for Seniors programme is a benefit for lower-income seniors that covers a surprisingly long list of things: housekeeping, yard work, medical alert services, some appliances and personal items, and respite stays in a care centre. The programme maximum is $5,872 a benefit year across all categories.
Who qualifies
Your parent needs to be 65 or older, an Alberta resident, and under the income threshold, which is set each year. If they already receive the Alberta Seniors Benefit they are probably eligible; the income thresholds were lowered in Budget 2026, so check the current figures.
What it covers
- Light housekeeping at home, up to the programme’s annual housekeeping maximum, and yard work such as grass cutting and snow removal. Not available if a family member is paid to do it.
- Respite for a family caregiver, but only when the senior stays in a care centre, for up to four weeks a year. It does not pay for respite delivered at home.
- A personal medical alert service, and certain appliances and personal items.
How to apply
There is a form, and receipts or quotes are needed. We will give you a written quote for housekeeping hours in the format the programme wants, and we will help fill in the form if that is useful.
