This is not tax advice, and the thresholds change every year. But three things are worth knowing before you decide you cannot afford care.
Medical expense tax credit
Attendant care paid to an agency is generally an eligible medical expense on a federal return. How much can be claimed depends on whether the disability tax credit is also being claimed, which is where families most often get it wrong. Keep every invoice. Ours are itemised by date, hours and type of care for exactly this reason.
Disability tax credit
If your parent is markedly restricted in dressing, feeding, walking or mental functions, they may qualify. It needs a form certified by a medical practitioner, it can be back-dated, and it unlocks other programmes. Many families assume it is only for younger people with disabilities. It is not.
Canada caregiver credit
Claimed by the family member supporting a dependant with a physical or mental impairment. Adult children who are already paying for care out of their own pocket miss this one constantly.
What we send you
An annual summary every February, without being asked, worded the way the CRA expects for attendant care and noting which portion, if any, was publicly funded. Ask and we will send it to your accountant directly.
